Bail hearing starts for attempted murder suspect

A 20-year-old Walpole Island man remains behind bars after appearing in court today (May 29) in Chatham for a bail hearing.

Evidence discussed during the hearing is protected by a publication ban.

Reports say Taylor Ermitinger is facing one count of attempted murder, stemming from an altercation at Sam’s Hotel on Dufferin Avenue in Wallaceburg on May 20.

He sat quietly in the prisoner’s box in handcuffs during the proceedings, wearing a grey and black hooded shirt, with the sleeves rolled up, displaying an assortment of dark tattoos up his forearms.

The defence lawyer and assistant crown attorney took turns questioning a police officer during the hearing.

The matter was put over until next week, when it will continue.

A justice of the peace will decide whether the defendant will be granted bail.

The victim in the case, a 19-year-old Walpole Island man, suffered life threatening head injuries as a result of the altercation.

18-year-old Jessy Elder is also in custody in relation to the case.

Elder is set to appear in Chatham court tomorrow morning (May 30) for a bail hearing.

He has been named as an accessory to the crime and is also facing a charge of obstructing police.

The Chatham-Kent Police Major Crime Unit continue to investigate the case.
