We’re being held hostage!

In support of the expansion fundraiser for the Chatham-Kent Family Health Team Wallaceburg site, us at the Sydenham Current are being “held hostage.”

On Wednesday, June 4 the Sydenham Current crew will be at Gatsby’s Grill House in Wallaceburg at 750 James Street, raising money to help bring two new doctor’s to Wallaceburg and make room for another down the road.

Dana Haggith and Aaron Hall will be kick-starting the Media Hostage festivities, but other local media are to take part on separate days as well.

Watch for more information on the Sydenham Current – website, Facebook Page and Twitter Page – for exact times and details on how to help bail Dana and Aaron out on June 4… or how to keep them held hostage!

All the proceeds are going towards the Wallaceburg Medical Centre project.

Wallaceburg Coun. Jeff Wesley, who sits on the fundraising committee, said there is a segment of the Wallaceburg community that does not have a doctor.

“My wife and I are one of those,” he said. “We’re going to be getting some new doctors in town, which we sorely need. We’re going to allow people that don’t have a doctor, and people that have a doctor maybe in Corunna or other outlying communities… and bring them back into Wallaceburg, so it’s more convenient for everybody.”

Wesley added: “Some of the doctors coming in are also going to want to work in the ER, they are going to put shifts in the Emergency Department in Sydenham District Hospital, which is excellent for the hospital and excellent for the Emergency Department, that’s a big plus. Doctor’s like their family practice, but they also like the learning, the excitement and the dynamics of working in the Emergency Department. So having an ER is actually a draw to get certain doctors here.”

Wesley said some local businesses are doing special promotions and collecting donations for the project as well, including: Stekelbos Watch & Clock Repairs and Crabby Joe’s in Wallaceburg, and National Bank Financial.

“Rob Watson at National Bank Financial is putting up $10,000 in matching funds during the media hostage,” Wesley said. “We also just found out that the Southwest Regional Credit Union is donating $10,000 towards the cause. People are getting on board, we’re starting to build some momentum, and I’ve got a list of companies that I’ll be following up with today.”
