Questions surrounding ‘dump’ ownership

Some questions are being raised about who owns the property at the corner of Duke Street and Murray Street in Wallaceburg.

Officials with Chatham-Kent are saying CSX owns it, while a spokesperson with CSX is saying the property is owned by the Municipality.

Neighbours have expressed concern over some barrels with unknown contents being placed on the property and with local children playing in the area and climbing on the dumpsters. Read the full story here: Concerns raised over CSX ‘dump’ site

Paul Lacina, Chatham-Kent’s chief building official, said they have checked and double checked.

“We don’t own it,” he said. “We confirmed (yesterday) morning and doubled checked with our legal services.”

Lacina added there is some property in the vicinity of this property that is owned by the Municipality, which is located closer to the rail road tracks in the immediate area.

Lacina said the Municipality has spoken with CSX officials in Chicago, and was “assured” the property would be cleaned up.

Lacina added they are concerned about children playing in the area.

“We have notified the Chatham-Kent Police Service,” he said. “They are keeping an eye out.”

Carla Groleau, a spokesperson with CSX, told the Sydenham Current that the property was sold to Chatham-Kent last year.

“The location is near Milepost CEA-41,” Groleau wrote in an e-mail. “The sale included all property and tracks between Milepost CEA-18.7 and Milepost CEA-44.5.”

Groleau added: “CSX does not own or operate at this location.”
