Legion Fishing Derby fills Dresden’s shores

The annual fishing derby was held along the shores of the Sydenham River outside of Dresden Legion Br. 113 today (June 7.)

Organizer Bob Everitt said about 100 kids registered for the derby.

“It sets the summer off for the kids,” he said. “The Pet and Hoby Parade was last night and the fishing derby is today and the Legion has a buffet breakfast from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. tomorrow.”

Everitt added a lot of good prizes were donated, from sleeping bags to bicycles.

Prizes are awarded in a variety of classes, for biggest fish, smallest fish, etc.

“There are all kinds of hot dogs and chips and pop for the kids,” he said.

Everitt said he has been organizing the derby for 29 years.

“It’s free, everything is free, they don’t have to worry about anything,” he said.
