Winning starts with preparation

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

As an avid runner, I was motivated recently after reading a great quote from 1989 NYC Marathon winner, Juma Ikaanga: “The will to win means nothing if you haven’t the will to prepare.”

I have run a number of races over the years and have been on both sides of this sound advice.

There is great satisfaction when you arrive at race day fully prepared, but woe to the runner who loafed off in training and then tried to succeed on race day.

It just doesn’t work.

Preparation means doing the hard work when no one else is watching.

The athletes we see on television, succeeding in their given sport, are the same ones waking up long before dawn to head to the gym and get their workout in.

We don’t see them on those particular days, but we do see the results of those workouts on game day.

Winning comes at a price.

Someone once said, “The longest distance between two points is a short cut.”

The tiny ant knows this, too.

Speaking of the ant, Proverbs 30:25 says, “Ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer.”

Do you have a big event coming up?

A big race, or a wedding, or a job interview, perhaps?

How’s that preparation going for you, anyway?

Will you be ready when your big day comes?
