The Wallaceburg Animal Shelter is set to benefit from a hefty estate donation.

Staff received a donation of $73,546.33 from the estate of Jean Shirley Carscallen.

The funds are to be used specifically for capital improvements to the animal shelter in Wallaceburg, located at 105 Arnold Street.

Wallaceburg Coun. Jeff Wesley said Carscallen’s late husband Charlton, was a long-time lawyer in Wallaceburg and their family is a fixture in the community.

“It’s a nice gift for Wallaceburg,” he said.

Wallaceburg Coun. Sheldon Parsons said this is a great option for people, that want to give back specifically to a cause they believe in.

“It’s too to thank Jean,” he said. “But this could be an option for others.”

Nancy Havens, manager of licensing services, said they are waiting for the estate to be finalized before any work will move forward.

Havens indicates in her report the building compliance coordinator completed a building assessment of the property and recommended the following capital improvements:

– Design and build an addition for 5 quarantine kennels at an estimated cost of $45,000

– Improve ventilation/HVAC system in the building at an estimated cost of $15,000

– Miscellaneous improvements such as new washer/dryer, interior painting, upgrade flooring, etc. at an estimated cost of $15,000
