Wallaceburg woman among those charged on Rondeau Bay

Rondeau Bay (4)

On July 5, 2014, Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers conducted patrols on Lake Erie and Rondeau Bay, which resulted in charges being laid in three separate incidents.

Just after 12:30 p.m., while patrolling Lake Erie, officers observed two kayakers several hundred metres from shore. Neither of the kayakers were wearing a Personal Floatation Device (PFD). As a result of the subsequent OPP investigation, a 25 year old male and a 25 year old female from Chicago, IL, have been charged with Operating Human-Powered Pleasure Craft Without Personal Flotation Device Or Lifejacket Of Appropriate Size For Each On Board.

While still on patrol on Lake Erie, shortly after 3:00 p.m., the officers’ attention was drawn to a small personal watercraft with two parties on board, towing an inflated tube carrying two parties. Further investigation also determined that the operator was not in possession of an Operator’s Card. A 33 year old female from Wallaceburg has been charged with Operating Vessel To Tow A Person On Water Or In Air Without Seating Space On Board For Every Person Being Towed, and Failure To Have Proof Of Competency On Board A Pleasure Craft.

Later that day, just after 6:00 p.m., while officers were patrolling Rondeau Bay, they conducted a vessel check and located open containers of alcohol on the vessel. A 19 year old male from Chatham has been charged with Operating Boat Underway With Open Container Of Liquor.

Chatham-Kent OPP is reminding the public to exercise safety on the water while enjoying our local waterways.

Safety on the water is a shared responsibility and we all have a role to play. Collectively, if we all take pro-active steps we can help make this summer a safe and enjoyable one for everyone
