Mayoral candidate Marjorie Crew officially kicked off her campaign during an event in between Wallaceburg and Chatham last night.

She revealed her platform at Country View Golf Course in Oungah.

“I am running for mayor because I love this community and I want to offer our citizens a choice for change in Chatham-Kent,” she stated in a press release. “My vision will make Chatham-Kent a dynamic municipality that encourages growth, jobs and community engagement.”

Crew added: “My platform is simple: leadership. I believe that the strength of a mayor is based on their ability to lead the community and council forward. I have that ability. We continue building on the existing strengths of our communities in Chatham-Kent, we will also address the challenges – challenges we are all well aware of.”

Crew said the economy is a challenge she will tackle “full force” as mayor.

“While I fully believe that we belong on the world stage, I also know that we need to invest more locally to strengthen our home-grown businesses,” she stated. “We need to help local businesses diversify and expand to create employment in Chatham-Kent.”

Crew said small businesses, agri-business and tourism are areas she will support as mayor.

“Building employment from within and supporting existing businesses is an investment in Chatham-Kent and our people,” she stated.

Crew outlined her stance on taxes, noting she strongly believes in balance and the need for fiscal responsibility.

“It is clear that citizens want to keep tax increases low,” she stated. “However, we need to properly fund our future needs.”

Crew said she believes in the need for more trails, green space, bike lanes and recreational facilities.

“Access to recreation opportunities doesn’t just benefit citizens looking to stay healthy and active, it is also an economic driver and a major consideration for companies looking to set up in Chatham-Kent,” Crew stated.

Crew added: “Individual communities are the jewels of Chatham-Kent. As a Municipality we should be supportive and assist them in their growth. As our communities become stronger individually, we as a Municipality become stronger as well. We must respect each community’s uniqueness and encourage participation as a vital part of Chatham-Kent.”

Election day is Oct. 27.
