HOT TOPIC

WAMBO didn’t start off on the right foot on Friday night for the K of C.

The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit noted some health concerns with the chicken they had prepared at their annual chicken dinner.

Health Unit officials told us that they asked the K of C to not serve a significant portion of the chicken, and subsequently the K of C shut down their event.

Here is our full story: Health Unit defends decision at K of C dinner

This is what people were saying about the situation:

Robert said in the Sydenham Current comment section: “Sounds like the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit is feeling the heat.”

Bill said in the Sydenham Current comment section: “I believe Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit officials should work and assist with food vendors at special events and have available staff to assist with the entire process from the beginning from handling, cooking and serving, rather then disrupting service or quantity expected to be served as done during WAMBO with K of C Annual Chicken Dinner. By simply ruling on the final product just prior to serving is an unfair process to all the good charitable organizations and what they and their volunteers try to achieve. These people do this for the love of their community and Chatham-Kent Health Unit should pitch in their expectations with their help through the entire process from beginning to end to ensure this would not happen again.”

Eric said on Facebook: “What a waste of food!!”

Heather said on Facebook: “So why would they throw out 300 chickens???”

George said on Facebook: “Sad.”

Tristina said on Facebook: “26 years we have been using the same method and on the past few years Chatham has been wanting to take WAMBO away from us. So I’m sorry that I’m never going to forgive them for trying to ruin one of the few traditions that we have and not allowing it to be taken away from us as they do with everything else Wallaceburg does!!”

Jason said on Facebook: “Been years and foods been safe all the time and we use gloves and precook the food.”

Luisa said on Facebook: “Why now come and ruin this event. No one in the past wambo years as any one gotten sick and I remember the weather was even hotter. Just something else to ruin for Wallaceburg. Ya good ole Chatham-Kent…..NOT.”

Brian said on Facebook: “What a bunch of crap!!!!! That money goes to help the kids in town. Shame Shame.”

Steve said on Facebook: “They don’t say what the temp issues are but they do mention cross contamination. (Keep it cold and keep it clean). I bet next year K of C do it by the book and it will be a huge success.”

  1. This all could have been avoided. The Health Unit runs Safe Food Handling courses and it is free. There should be a few people in the group who have this. I found this course super valuable for our group running food booths at festivals.
