A public meeting is coming up in Wallaceburg to discuss the communities water supply.

Stantec Consulting has been hired by the Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission to conduct the Wallaceburg and Area Water Supply Review Municipal Class Environmental Assessment.

This assessment is set to analyze the existing water treatment plant in Wallaceburg, and also look at alternative options to supply Wallaceburg with water.

A public meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 18 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the UAW Hall in Wallaceburg.

Wallaceburg Coun. Jeff Wesley, who also chairs the Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Comission, said PUC is currently looking at options for the supply of drinking water to Wallaceburg.

“Do we stay with our current source? Do we join the rest of CK and get water from Lake Erie or do we hook into the supply from Lake Huron? And what are the benefits and costs of each option,” Wesley said. “The Wallaceburg water treatment plant needs some capital upgrades so now is the time to look at the costs of all possible options.”

Wesley said he has a couple of concerns he’d to see addressed.

“In looking at the various options I am upset that Sarnia continues to dump raw and partially treated sewage into the St. Clair River whenever there is a heavy rain event – this has to stop and I will be following up on this,” he said. “I am also disappointed that Lake Erie continues to have problems with toxic algae blooms although this has not been an issue for the CK PUC to this point in time.

Wesley added: “An important issue that needs community input.”

The September 18 meeting is open to the public, with a presentation starting at 5:30 p.m.
