Another name has been added to the mix in Wallaceburg for the upcoming municipal election.

William Arends, 76, is going to be running for one of two council spots in Wallaceburg.

Arends said he sits on the WATCH committee and is concerned about spills coming into Wallaceburg’s drinking water.

“The city of Sarnia, being as large as it is, I don’t understand why they had to dump into the St. Clair River for these people here in Wallaceburg and Walpole Island,” he said.

Arends, who has been the president of the Wallaceburg Rotary Club for five years, said he has more time on his hands.

“I felt uncomfortable if I didn’t put my name in I’d probably kick myself, even if I didn’t win, that is not the point,” he said. “We have to work on the community itself. I’m a past president for five years with the Wallaceburg Rotary Club… so now I’m kind of loose.”

Arends said the local workforce and jobs is a priority as well.

“How you have to approach it… you have to get these people to come and then come back and not to forget about you,” he said. “Something like getting members for the Rotary Club, you have ask them a number of times. We also have to look after our roads. When you drive a bicycle you can see the potholes.”

Arends said he served on the former Chatham Township council back in 1977.

He has lived in Wallaceburg for 62 years, and is originally from Holland.

Arends is no stranger to running in municipal elections.

He ran for mayor in Chatham-Kent in 2003, gathering 1,490 votes.

He also ran for council in 2006 and 2010, gathering 160 and 126 votes in those elections.

Arends joins incumbents Jeff Wesley and Sheldon Parsons, along with Carmen McGregor in the 2014 election.

Election day is Oct. 27.
