After only a week on the campaign trail, a Thamesville resident has dropped out of the election race in East Kent.

Paul Spence announced in a letter that he was withdrawing from the upcoming Chatham-Kent election, after just filing his papers on the final day of eligibility on Sept. 12.

“I would like to publicly renounce my desire to run for municipal council,”he wrote. “Sadly in one short week of listening to our leaders and community, it has become apparent that we are a broken community that I won’t lead in.”

He added: “As I approached people and business owners, and sat in leadership debates, it has become clear that we are a very selfish community. Many see our leadership as the problem and want change. I, on the other hand, see a community that has a leadership that reflects its citizens.

Our friends at the Chatham Voice have published the entire letter here.

Incumbents Jim Brown and Steve Pinsonneault are still running for re-election, and they are being challenged by newcomers Mona Natvik and David VanDamme.

Technically, Spence will still appear on the ballot on election day as anyone who decides to withdraw their nomination, must notify the municipla clerk in writing by the
close of nominations, which was at 2 p.m. on September 12.

Election day is Oct. 27
