It will be a collaborative effort moving forward, as the Chatham-Kent Hospice prepares to serve the C-K community.

Jodi Maroney, director of development for the Chatham-Kent Hospice, said there was a number of volunteers that got together three years ago to try and figure out a way to bring a residential hospice to the community.

“They realized early on that the community couldn’t support another charity that was going out and having a large annual fundraising campaign every year,” she said. “So they looked for a way to operation in a way that was both efficient and effective.”

Maroney said they decided to collaborate with St. Andrew’s Residence and share back office services..

“Administrative duties, purchasing, payroll… that way we can keep our operating costs as low as possible,” she said. “What we’ll need to do every year as far as fundraising, will be much lower.”

Maroney said St. Andrew’s Residence also has land at their 99 Park St. location in Chatham that they are going to lease to the Hospice.

“It will be a brand new building, physically separate from the residence, it will not be attached but it will be in close proximity.” Maroney added: “Although Administrative resources will be shared, all services directly related with end-of-life care will be will be separate and highly-specialized .”

Maroney said the reason behind this is because a hospice is a different business than a senior retirement home.

“We hope that most people that use the hospice are in their senior years , but unfortunately that is not always the case,” she said. “We will be providing services to people who have terminal illness, offering an alternative to dying at home or in the hospital. We will also provide support to their family and loved ones.”
