Top-tier support will be available for patients at the 10-bed residential hospice being built in Chatham-Kent.

There will also be great support available to families before, during and after a loved one’s stay at the Hospice.

“During the illness while their loved one is ill, there will be support there,” said Jodi Maroney, director of development for the Chatham-Kent Hospice. “Obviously, pain management is key for the patient but also emotional support for the families… spiritual support.”

Maroney said counseling will be available.

“Into the bereavement process, after they have lost their loved one, there will be grief counseling,” she said. “Youth and children and adult grief counselling available.”

Maroney said the Hospice is looking to fill some gaps in the community.

“Really, what we are trying to do is look and see what the community has to offer now, in way of palliative care services, see where there are gaps and see where the Hospice can help fill those gaps,” she said. “There way be other services offered at this point, we’re not 100 per cent sure, but definitely there will be services for families afterwards.”

With all their services and initiatives moving forward, the Chatham-Kent Hospice is following a list of values, which spell out – We Care:

W – elcome Home

We want you to feel this is your “home away from home”. We are here to help. Our Hospice is more than the building. It is our “philosophy of care”. Compassion is at the heart of what we do and why we exist.

E – ngagement

Patients and families come first. We provide a loving and supportive atmosphere in which family and friends can say goodbye. We support our patients and their families in finding personal fulfillment as they deal with end-of-life challenges. We make every effort to support people in transition, sadness and loss while fostering dignity, connection, enjoyment and peace.

C – ollaboration

We achieve so much more when we walk hand-in-hand with each other. We believe our patient families, our staff, our community partners and volunteers make positive life-altering changes to lives in every moment they spend with us.

A – ccountability

We hold ourselves accountable to the highest standards of stewardship, transparency and governance in all aspects of our work.

R – espect

We respect the intrinsic worth of every individual. Hospice palliative care affirms life and embraces quality of life for terminally ill people and their families. It values dignity and personal choice.

E – xcellence

We continually challenge ourselves to focus on best practices in all that we do. We strive to tap the brilliance within ourselves to generate ideas that will continually improve compassionate care.

The Chatham-Kent Hospice is currently in a capital campaign to raise funds to build a 10-bed residential hospice in Chatham-Kent. The Chatham-Kent Hospice will be a 10 bed residence with additional space for bereavement counselling, resource library and meeting rooms with the flexibility to grow and play a role in developing a centre of learning for healthcare providers and the families of Chatham-Kent.
