Volunteers needed for C-K Hospice

As the Chatham-Kent Hospice moves forward, they are looking to recruit and train a good number of volunteers.

“The Sarnia Hospice is a 10-bed hospice and they have 360 volunteers,” said Jodi Maroney, director of development for the Chatham-Kent Hospice. “They do anything from cleaning and cooking, reception, gardening. The most highly-trained volunteers are bedside volunteers . They will be available to sit with the family or the patient. When the family can’t be there., they don’t have to fear that their loved one is alone.”

Maroney said they anticipate needing close to 200 volunteers once the Chatham-Kent Hospice opens.

“We’re encouraging people, if they are interested at all to get on our website and fill out a volunteer application form,” she said. “That way they are in our system and we can stay in touch with them. We’ve recently hired a Volunteer Coordinator who will ensure the volunteers are trained before we open.

Maroney added: “By signing up now, we have an idea of who is interested, and how much more recruitment we need to do. It’s a great way for people to really make a difference in their community.”

The Chatham-Kent Hospice is currently in a capital campaign to raise funds to build a 10-bed residential hospice in Chatham-Kent. The Chatham-Kent Hospice will be a 10 bed residence with additional space for bereavement counselling, resource library and meeting rooms with the flexibility to grow and play a role in developing a centre of learning for healthcare providers and the families of Chatham-Kent.
