What does it take to make you happy?

detour road work

By Brian Horrobin – From The Pastor’s Pen

There’s an interesting saying out there that goes something like this, “The happy person is the one who can enjoy the scenery when taking a detour.”

Many years ago my wife and I were visiting Vermont during the peak of the fall colour that is so prevalent in that part of the United States.

We were on our way to find a particular bed and breakfast but had to go off the interstate, resulting in us newbies getting temporarily lost on the back roads of central Vermont.

This unexpected detour turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip that year.

Our car headed down untouched gravel roads splashed with the golds, reds, and oranges of the magnificent deciduous trees that lined our unplanned route.

We eventually made it to our desired destination but realized the delay had been very much worth it.

How do you treat detours in your life?

Do they impede the progress of your joy, or can you adapt to the shift in plans to get the most out of your experience?

Lemons can become lemonade and delays can turn into rest stops along the way if we can keep from getting our knickers in a knot.

So, the next time you’re stopped by one of those roadwork projects that stands in the way of you getting to your destination on time, use that interruption to thank God for some of the many blessings in your life, instead of fuming over what you cannot change.

Sometimes there’s nice scenery hidden in those detours!
