Will we have a ‘white’ Christmas?

Each year as December 25th approaches, everyone begins to wonder if the ground will be blanketed with a fresh layer of snow on Christmas morning.

A meteorologist with Environment Canada says it’s not “looking too good” for a white Christmas in Wallaceburg, Dresden, Walpole Island and all of Chatham-Kent at this point in time.

“We do have a storm system that is going to be influencing the area as we approach Christmas Day and that storm system will continue to effect the areas right through Christmas Day as well,” Geoff Coulson, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, told the Sydenham Current.

“It looks like temperatures are going to be mild enough to keep whatever falls out of this system, at least in the lead up to Christmas on the 23rd and on Christmas Eve… it will be rainfall.”

Coulson said the rain is expected to turn into snow on Christmas Day itself.

“We’re actually looking at temperatures turning a little bit colder, that would be the early morning hours on Christmas Day and through the day itself, temperatures may be around the freezing mark or plus one,” he said.

“We could see a bit of flurry activity on Christmas Day, but it might not be enough to cover the ground and give us an official white Christmas.”

Coulson added the only question at this point “is how quickly we’ll see that transition over to wet snow or to plain accumulating snow on Christmas Day and how much snow there will be.”

The current forecast for Chatham-Kent on Christmas Day calls for clouds with a 70 per cent chance of flurries, windy, with a low of plus 1 and high of plus 2.
