Garbage ‘toter carts’ being delivered in Wallaceburg

Some large garbage bins are set to be left in Wallaceburg driveways in a few weeks.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent issued a statement regarding ‘toter carts’ being distributed in Wallaceburg in the coming weeks.

“As there have been some questions, please note that Progressive Waste Systems (PWS) is delivering ‘toter carts’ to residential properties receiving curbside garbage collection in the Community of Wallaceburg.”

The delivery is reportedly part of a 45-day pilot project in Wallaceburg and Tilbury.

After the time period is up, anyone who chooses to keep the bins will be billed $75.

The Municipality said the carts have already been dropped off in Tilbury and are set to be dropped off in Wallaceburg on March 23.

“This is a private initiative being undertaken by PWS and has not been directed by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent,” the Municipality said. “The current municipal curbside collection program being offered to the residents of Wallaceburg remains unchanged.”

Chatham-Kent officials said if residents have questions or comments, they should call PWS at 519-360-9435 extension ‘0’ for more information – or to have their ‘toter cart’ removed.

Wallaceburg Coun. Carmen McGregor told the Sydenham Current it was “total confusion” in Tilbury this week, as the totes have already been dropped off.

“They just dropped them off… there was no notice,” McGregor said. “There was a lot of disruption and everyone was calling the Municipality. This is not a Municipal initiative.”

McGregor said the Chatham-Kent legal department is investigating the situation.

“We have a contract with them to pick up garbage and they are changing the way they are picking up garbage,” McGregor said.

No one is obligated to keep the bins, McGregor added.

“It’s not mandated. There is no contractual agreement. If they don’t want it, they have to deal with the company,” she said.

The idea behind the totes being distributed is reportedly to improve with litter, odour, pest and crow problems along with creating efficiencies with the company.

We’ll provide more information when it becomes available.

  1. If you receive something you did not order it is yours. What stops people from dropping any thing off and billing you for it?
