Employees from Walmart in Wallaceburg have been busy raising funds for the Children’s Miracle Network.

Martha Cartier, assistant manager at the Wallaceburg Walmart said the community has stepped up to the plate with donations.

“Wallaceburg, the community itself has been very generous,” Cartier told the Sydenham Current.

“We have been accepting donations at the registers in exchange for balloons. We are already at 75% of our goal. We needed just over $8,500 and we are at the $6,500 almost $7,000 mark.”

Cartier said the crew from Wal-Mart did a few laps around the store this morning, some sporting angel wings, to raise some awareness and more funds as well.

“Our associates raised money from the community, family and friends,” Cartier said. “This is the last day of the event so we are just trying to boost funds and it goes all to the Children’s hospital in London.”

The proceeds are going towards the Children’s Miracle Network, which supports the Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre.

The local “Champion” sponsor this year is seven-year-old, Andie Morrison.

“Andie was only 6 weeks old when she was rushed to the pediatric critical care unit at Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre for her first blood transfusion,” the Children’s Miracle Network website states. “After several weeks of transfusions and a bone marrow aspiration, doctors diagnosed her with Diamond-Blackfan anemia, a rare bone marrow defect that prevents her body from creating red blood cells.”

“Since then, Andie has received regular blood transfusions and will continue to for the rest of her life. She has endured numerous medical challenges, including being at risk for cardiac arrest. Andie also faces the emotional challenges that come with having a lifelong illness.”

Walmart in Wallaceburg is having a barbecue today (Friday, May 22) as well to raise some additional funds.

“The campaign ends this weekend. If people want to donate they can still do that throughout the weekend,” Cartier said.
