The Chatham-Kent police have arrested a woman following a shoplifting complaint in Chatham.

Last night, around 6:15 p.m. police responded to the Downtown Chatham Centre on King Street as the loss prevention officer had a woman in custody for shoplifting. The woman stole a Lindt chocolate bar valued at $1.50.

A 41-year-old Walpole Island woman was charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by a crime under $5,000.

  1. This is embarrassing.
    I don’t mean a woman stealing a $1.50 candy bar…
I mean that the municipality is going to waste time and money to bring this to court. Not to mention wasting tax payers money to have an officer come and assess the situation. As well as wasting that officer’s time that he could be using for important issues.
    Seriously? Over $1.50?
I’ll pay for the damn candy bar and just ban the woman from the mall lol.

To clarify, this is not a stab at this article or the Current. 😉
I just think it’s so silly to go through all that trouble over a candy bar.

    • It comes down to one thing, accountability. This person will go to court but will not serve anytime. She will be banned from the mall and have a record. How can you expect people to learn if there aren’t any consequences.
