Some new events and some old favourites will be taking place on the southside of Wallaceburg during WAMBO 27.

“The new things for this year, we are pretty happy that we have the cardboard box boat racing as well we have the inner tube racing, it will all be in the water,” said Wayne Barnier, the WAMBO committee member in charge of the southside activities. “We want a pre-registration so we have an idea on what we need, how many participants and everything like that.”

Barnier said there is also going to be a flea market.

“That is also new this year. $10 per table. If you have flea market or yard sale stuff, however many tables you want it is $10 a table. The thing is that the vendors have to bring their own table or pop up tent but however many tables they bring its a $10 charge per table.”

Barnier said Bob DeKoning is taking care of the inner tube races.

“That should be lots of fun. If I’m not mistaken the tubes and the paddles are going to be supplied for the tube races.”

Barnier said for the cardboard races, this is a brainstormed idea of a couple of the volunteers on the southside.

“So we are running with it. They are made out of cardboard and duct tape. The paddles are made out of cardboard and duct tape as well. The crew members is the Captain and the First Mate. If you want to put two in that’s fine. It’s just going to be a fun project and fun to watch. We hope everybody comes out with a positive attitude and comes out to watch, and comes out of the water with a positive attitude because some of these aren’t going to float. We have already got some major people that have signed up already.”

Barnier said Home Hardware is supporting the whole project, along with Homeward Realty.

“There are a few other businesses in town that are on the verge of signing up for it. We are looking for as many as possible. It’s a family thing too. If the family wants to put them together.”

Barnier said there are a couple of rules for the boats as competitors must be 18 years of age or older and they must supply their own cardboard and footwear.

“Every boat will have a floaty attached to it so that if it sinks we can recover it that way. We are trying to take as many steps as possible to keep the environment cleaned up after.”

Barnier said they have some really unique trophies being built for this project.

“It’s just going to be a lot of fun.”

Barnier said the soap box races, the fire trucks, the toy tent with all of the collectibles and different antique toys, will all be on the southside once again.

“There is a gentleman that comes out in the back with a train set and trailer. The kids really like that. There will be food vendors too,” he said.

There will also be antique custom bicycles this year.

“I have been trying to get that organized for quite a few years now. We have got some local fellows that are building and restoring them so they are going to be on the southside this year too.”

There will be three bouncies for the kids to play in as well.

“We want to promote young people entertainment,” Barnier said “The last couple of years we have been doing kids karaoke and that went over fairly good, but we want to change it up. This year it’s a kids talent show. Whatever they want to do, if they want to come out and sing, dance or even do a puppet show. It’s just to promote young people in Wallaceburg.”

Barnier said WAMBO is a family oriented event, but the southside is more geared towards the young people.

“I personally believe in promoting the young people who have a talent. It is neat to watch a young person get up there on stage and strut their stuff.

The normal food vendors and other vendors will be on hand as well.

Barnier said they are always looking for volunteers to help out.

“Not only on the southside but WAMBO in general. Financial volunteers are welcome as well. If somebody wants to support us in any way, shape or form.”

Barnier added there will also be a couple of clowns on the southside that will be walking around and entertaining the kids.

“I think it is going to be a good show. Try to keep the people in Wallaceburg instead of going to the beach,” he said.
