A meeting about French Immersion coming to Christ The King Catholic School in Wallaceburg next September is taking place tonight, Monday, November 23.

St. Clair Catholic District School Board officials say second language learning provides the opportunity to:

– Communicate in French and English

– Enhance listening skills

– Enhance memory skills

– Enhance understanding and use of the first language

– Develop creative and critical thinking and problem-solving skills

– Increase post-secondary educational and employment

SCCDSB officials said the French Immersion Program is intended for English-speaking students.

Children may enter the program in either Junior Kindergarten or Senior Kindergarten and require no previous experience with the French language.

An information meeting is being held at the 227 Thomas Ave. school at 6:30 p.m.

The SCCDSB Board of Trustees approved the establishment of the program back in June.

“Our French Immersion programs are very successful at our schools in Sarnia, Chatham and Blenheim,” stated Dan Parr, Director of Education. “We are very pleased to bring this wonderful learning opportunity to our students in Wallaceburg.”

A survey, which was completed by parents, shows that a minimum of 23 students would be enrolled in the program at FDK, beginning in September 2016.

“These numbers are very encouraging and demonstrate a level of interest that is sufficient for us to move forward with this program,” said Laura Callaghan, superintendent of education and the former principal at Christ The King. “We have already held a meeting for interested parents and they are very excited to have this tremendous opportunity for their children.”
