A pair of Chatham-Kent councillors are stepping up to ensure everyone knows Chatham-Kent is an open, inclusive and accepting community.

Stemming from a recent successful motion by South Kent Coun. Trevor Thompson, Chatham Coun. Brock McGregor has launched a campaign on you.leadnow.ca

, calling for online signatures to support the following statement of acceptance:

“As residents of Chatham-Kent we are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, multicultural, and diverse community. All individuals, regardless of religion, cultural background, or ethnicity, are welcome to make Chatham-Kent home.

Our municipality reflects the Canadian ideals of cooperation in support of the vulnerable, and commitment to the responsibilities of our global citizenship.

Together we welcome and support those joining our great community. Together we choose acceptance.”

“I think having community input, and to validate that statement is an important next step,” McGregor said. “Community members can sign on and validate the message from council.”

McGregor added: “There is reason to be proud of the number of service clubs, faith-based organizations, community groups and private community members that have already come forward and are looking for ways to help. Not only is it important that we demonstrate our support for these groups, but we take this opportunity during this global event to reflect on who we are as a community.”
