Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services and Monsignor Uyen Catholic School teamed up with The Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Team and the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council for the Swing into Summer Safety campaign.

Chatham-Kent was selected to host one of five municipal launch events.

“As part of the Year Of Mercy, the Monsignor Uyen Catholic School Social Justice Team partnered with the Chatham-Kent Emergency Services to fundraise for the Red Cross and residents of Fort McMurray,” says Principal, Juli Faubert. “Our students were outstanding in their efforts to organize a fundraising family picnic, BBQ and kickball game against CK firefighters. They raised approximately $2200 through food sales. We are grateful for the partnership with our local fire department and sponsors who made our day such a success.”

The school held a contest which included decorating classroom doors with the Swing Into Summer Safety theme and the class which returned the most completed Family Home Escape Plans won a kickball game against the CKFES team (including chiefs, administrative support staff and firefighters).

“We had a great time playing kickball against the FDK (Full Day Kindergarten) class. There was a lot of laughter,” explained Public Educator, Whitney Burk. “Thanks to the Toronto Blue Jays and the Fire Marshal’s Public Safety Council we were able to giveaway Toronto Blue Jay swag and a grand prize – 4 Toronto Blue Jays baseball caps and 4 field-level tickets to a 2016 regular season Blue Jays game.”

The “Swing Into Summer” campaign is aimed at improving public safety in Ontario by educating and raising awareness with school—age children and their families about fire safety and other injury prevention tips over the summer.
