Hospice thrilled with funding increase

Wellington Entrance June 2016

As part of the 2016 budget, the Province recently announced an increase in annual funding to residential hospices.

Chatham-Kent Hospice will receive an additional $15,000 per bed.

This will increase the annual provincial funding from $900,000 to $1,050,000 to be used for costs associated with nursing care.

“This is great news for our residential hospice and all of Chatham-Kent,” stated Jessica Smith, executive director for the Chatham-Kent Hospice.

“As we navigate our first year of operations, this commitment to increase funding will ease the gap in our annual operating budget and help us continue to help people live well until the end of life, as well as support the health and well-being of families and caregivers at a difficult time of their lives.”

Chatham-Kent Hospice will continue to rely on donations for operating costs excluded from the government funding model such as medical equipment & supplies, utilities, staffing costs, groceries, kitchen & office supplies and building maintenance.

Chatham-Kent Hospice began operating in April 2016 and to date has served over 41 families from across the municipality.

“Residential Hospice Care is a community driven initiative, supported by local donors and volunteers, as well as government” stated Jennifer Wilson, chair of the Chatham-Kent Hospice.

“Chatham-Kent Hospice thanks the Government and PA John Fraser for their support, and genuine compassion. I would also like to thank Hospice Palliative Care Ontario for working closely with the government to develop the details of the additional funding.”
