After covering Sloan songs for years, local band Walkin’ 47 is pumped to open up for the Canadian rockers at the Kinstock Music Festival in Dresden on Saturday, July 9.

“A dream come true,” said Scott Aarssen, rhythm guitar and back-up vocals for the band.

“You know we were fortunate enough to get to open for The Trews at RetroFest a few years ago and you know that was a dream come true and when we got asked to do this, it was kind of over the top.”

Aarssen added: “Sloan are a great inspiration to us so it’s pretty special and everyone is pretty stoked about it.”

Walkin’ 47 originally started by catering to Canadian rock n’ roll, Aarssen said.

“That was us. We do Hip, Sloan, Sam Roberts, Guess Who, Neil Young and all that kind of stuff. So that was how we all got together in the very beginning,” he said.

“Now we still cater to a lot of Canadian rock, that is what we are all into and that is what drives us all as far as musicianship goes. We play Top 40 stuff too, because we do a lot of festivals and parties.”

Walking’ 47 has been around with this particular group for about 10 years, and even longer before that.

Aarssen said the band is really looking forward to playing in Dresden.

“The community has got a good opportunity for a really good time at that particular event,” he said.

“I think it’s going to be really special and we are going to see a lot of local talent that is just spectacular. I mean the line up that’s there locally is really, really great and then you end the night with Sloan and it’s going to be really special.”

Aarssen added: “We are practicing the set list pretty hard, we have a pretty short set but there might be a few new tunes that our fans haven’t heard before.”

The band consists of: Jason Denys, bass guitar/back-up vocals; Drew Varsava, lead vocals/rhythm guitar/percussion; Scott Aarssen, rhythm guitar/back-up vocals; and Steve Bellan, drums/back-up vocals.
