After 32 years of working for the Childs family in Wallaceburg, Dorothy Taylor is hanging up her apron.

“Gord was of course the owner at the time. I applied for a housekeeping job but he said ‘hey, there is an opening in the kitchen, try it out and let me know how it works out.’ Well, and I stayed, and they couldn’t get rid of me,” Taylor told the Sydenham Current on Friday, the last day on the job for the 78-year-old.

Taylor, who is known as ‘Dot’ to everyone, worked for year’s at The Oaks Inn before joining Mark Childs and his crew over at The Black Goose in downtown Wallaceburg.

“When Mark said they had bought this place, he said ‘would you be interested?’. I wanted to see the end of the journey and we came up here,” she said.

“It is a beautiful place, we have all worked so hard. We have enjoyed it, well we are a lot closer than at the Oak’s because the place was so huge.”

She added: “We have been able to accommodate ourselves and a lot of our regular customers followed us up and that’s the main thing of why I like this place for so long, is being with beautiful customers because they become your friends after.”

Mark Childs said it won’t be the same without her.

“Back in the day, we issued employee of the year awards… the problem was that Dot would win every year so we just named the award after her. It was called the St. Dorothy Award and she is a saint to say the least,” Childs said.

“We wish Dot a long and happy, well-deserved, retirement.”
