Councillor requesting wind turbine moratorium

A Chatham councillor is requesting a stoppage to wind turbine construction in Chatham-Kent.

Michael Bondy is set to discuss a notice of motion at Monday’s (August 22) combined planning and council meeting being held at the Civic Centre in Chatham.

Bondy is asking that council petition the Provincial Government to immediately impose a moratorium on further wind turbine development within Chatham-Kent.

“The moratorium would remain in effect until such time that an environmental study is completed and an independent consultant determines such turbine development has no appreciable negative effect on well water,” Bondy says in his motion.

Bondy is also suggesting that the cost of these studies to be paid for by the involved wind energy companies.

At the forefront of issue has been the Water Wells First group.

Kevin Jakubec, organizer of the group, spoke with the Sydenham Current at a recent meeting for the Otter Creek Wind Farm project.

“The concern we have for Water Wells First is anywhere in Ontario where wells are threatened, we need to push that threat back,” he said.

“This imminent threat just happens to be a wind farm. What is causing that vibration damage concern is from the pile type foundations and the possibility of the wind farm going into seismic coupling.”

Here is a complete video of their latest meeting, which was held earlier this month at the Countryview Golf Course:

Water Wells First is currently raising money for the fees required for an Environmental Review Tribunal to challenge the Renewable Energy Approval for the North Kent Wind 1 project.
