While the Wallaceburg Kinsmen are set to be extra busy this Saturday at Pumpkinfest, the local group keep busy all year long.

Eric Hancock, Pumpkinfest organizer and Kinsmen member, said the group holds multiple fundraisers throuhgout the year.

“We do the 5601 draw,” he said. “We have been doing this for a number of years later in the fall. October, November period. We sell 200 tickets at $100 each and then we give out $5,601 in prizes. So it is an elimination draw. So the first ticket drawn gets $1 and the last winner gets $1,000.”

Hancock said the ticket to the 5601 also gets people a dinner.

“Last year we had a fish and chicken dinner,” he said.

“I am not sure what we are going to do this year because we are going to have to start planning that after Pumpkinfest is over. It is a good event for any evening for a couple to go out for a nice dinner, spend some time with some friends. Maybe win an little money and sponsor a great club.”

Hancock said the Kinsmen also do a ‘Beer for a Year’ draw after Christmas.

“We did one this year,” he said.

“It was the first one we have done. We sold out. Actually we could have sold more tickets. What happens is the winner gets their choice of a case of domestic beer every week for 52 weeks or $1,500. Next year we are going to make two main prizes, so the chances of winning are even better.”

Hancock said the group just recently held a Ford Drive, which raised about $6,000.

Hancock said the funds raised by the group end up going back into the community.

“Our Kinsmen Club has been around for well over 70 years,” he said.

“We were active with the Milk for Britain during WWII. We were involved with the construction of the Sydenham District Hospital, the pool, the first Zamboni purchased for the arena. We also built the Kinsmen Park, the Kinette Park and then over the years we have sponsored a number of sports clubs. Baseball, hockey, soccer and we continue to do that.”

Hancock added: “Basically we will support any organization that benefits the community. Unfortunately, our mandate does not allow us to support individuals, it has to be an organization.”

The Kinsmen will be out in full force on Saturday for their 2nd annual Pumpkinfest.
