Another Wallaceburg kid is heading to the National Lacrosse League.

Wallaceburg native Zach Herreweyers, who now lives in London, was drafted in the first round (9th overall) by the Colorado Mammoth on Monday night, as the league welcomed the newest crop of rookies at the draft held in Oakville.

Herreweyers was thrilled with the news.

“It’s an incredible feeling,” said Herreweyers told coloradomammoth.com.

“I’ve been waiting a long time for this, and I’m pretty happy that all the chips fell into place.”

The team was also ecstatic with their selection.

“Zach might be the most talented player in this year’s draft,” Dan Carey, Mammoth director of player personnel, told coloradomammoth.com.

“He has the ability to change a game with his skill and athleticism.”

Mammoth officials said after they traded for two-time 40-goal-scorer Zack Greer one week ago, the team also received a first-round pick.

On Monday night, the team converted the pick into the left-handed forward from Loyola University.

Herreweyers scored a team-high 84 goals in his junior and senior years combined, and has represented his country in world championship competition.

The league will begin its 31st year this season, which is set set to begin on December 29.

Herreweyers is not the first local player to play professional lacrosse.

Port Lambton’s Sean Pollack had a lengthy career in the NLL, Wallaceburg’s Jordan Durston was drafted by the Vancouver Stealth last season and Wallaceburg’s Tye Belanger has seen time between the pipes in the league.
