Students at Lambton-Kent Composite School in Dresden were dressed in orange today to recognize ‘Orange Shirt Day.’

Katelyn Law, a Grade 12 student at the school and the organizer of the initiative, told the Sydenham Current the nation-wide event is in honour of residential school children in the country.

“The residential school system was a blemish on Canada’s history,” she said.

“It’s terrible that it happened. Children were raped and beat. It’s awful that is happened, but it also teaches us to not repeat history.”

Law said she has taken a Native Studies History course at LKCS and the Grade 11 English curriculum was re-written to include the history of the residential school system.

She said she was happy to see so many of her fellow LKCS Cardinals sporting orange on Wednesday.

“We had a better turn out than I thought we would,” she said.

“It shows that our school really does care about stuff like this.”

The students and staff wearing orange on Wednesday gathered in the cafeteria for a group photo.
