Fatal fire not considered suspicious

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say a fatal fire on Tuesday in Wallaceburg is not being considered suspicious.

“Police continue to investigate with the assistance of the Coroner’s Office and Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office, however at this time, the fire is not considered suspicious,” said Const. Renee Cowell, public information officer, in a press release.

“Yesterday, a post-mortem examination was conducted at the London Health Sciences Center. The name of the deceased will not be released as per the family’s request.”

Police officials say just before 4 a.m. Tuesday morning, emergency crews responded to a residential fire on Nelson Street where one person was found deceased in the apartment.

Cowell said more information will be released as it becomes available.

Chatham-Kent police officers continue to hold the scene in downtown Wallaceburg.

Police tape surrounds the property at 126 Nelson Street, while two cruisers remain parked in the front and rear of the apartment building.

Investigators with the Chatham-Kent Police Service, Chatham-Kent Fire Department and the Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office combed through charred debris on Wednesday searching for forensic evidence.
