Chatham-Kent’s ‘living wage’ is $15.86/hour

The Social Inclusion Action Team of the Prosperity Roundtable is excited and pleased to be releasing the local Living Wage calculation to the Chatham-Kent community.

A living wage is not the same as a minimum wage. The living wage is based on a calculation that draws on community specific data to determine actual expenses that a family of two working parents raising two children face.

In Chatham-Kent the local living wage is calculated at $15.86 per hour, which translates to $30,563.50 per parents for a total of $61,127 annually.

“Understanding what it costs to live in a community helps all who are working towards building inclusive, supportive, vibrant cities,” stated Kate do Forno, project Coordinator for the Prosperity Roundtable.

“When all community members are able to participate fully; support local businesses, put their kids in extra-curricular activities, go out for dinner occasionally – we build communities where all are engaged. The cumulative effect of ensuring that no one is left behind means that we create a space were everyone wants to live, play and work.”

Local employers who are early supporters of a Living Wage include Bouma Builders Inc., Chatham-Kent Legal Clinic, CLAC, Junctura Inc. Group, Libro Credit Union, Mainstreet Credit Union, Owen Flooring, Radiance Massage Therapy & Spa Inc., and the United Way of Chatham-Kent.
