The construction is on-going as a sidewalk replacement project continues in downtown Wallaceburg.

Municipal officials have extended the road closure notice on Nelson Street in Wallaceburg as well.

The stretch of road between Wellington Street and James Street has been closed to southbound traffic since Tuesday, and will remain closed until Wednesday, November 2 at 7 p.m.

One lane will remain open for northbound traffic only.

Crews are busy replacing the sidewalk and curbs in the downtown core.

The construction has not led to any business closures while the project is taking place.

In fact, many businesses, including Foster’s Meats, Stubby Goat, and The Nail Place, have been offering “construction specials” as a result.

The Wallaceburg BIA is asking people to be patient.

“Please be patient as many sidewalks in the downtown area are being replaced,” the BIA posted on social media.

“It will be wonderful once completed.”

The sidewalks are being replaced as part of Chatham-Kent’s Sidewalk Replacement Program:

“Each year the Public Works Department work with the Engineering Department to develop a list of locations where the sidewalk requires replacement rather than a minor repair,” Municipal officials stated on their website.

“The Engineering Department uses this list to develop a plan for the replacement of sidewalks. Based on the amount of money available in the budget set by Council the work is tendered and carried out by a contractor. The Municipality of Chatham-Kent makes every effort to make the construction zones safe and efficient for the contractor and for the general public.”

Municipal officials have yet to return messages left by the Sydenham Current for more information about the project.

We’ll provide more information as it becomes available.
