Get rid of ‘dead wood’ before winter hits

It is a perfect time of the year to get rid of any dead wood in your trees, says a local certified arborist.

Greg Pilecki, owner of Chatham-Kent Tree Care, said taking care of this issue is important to do before winter hits.

“Winter storms, winter ice and winter wind can wreak havoc on the dead wood, bringing it down obviously damaging structures, cars and being a hazard to anybody in the path of it,” he said.

Spotting dead wood is obvious this time of year.

“You can see distinctively the leaves are falling and you get see large pieces of dead. You can see that there is dead in the tree or sometimes there won’t be leaves at all.”

Anther “to-do” before winter is pruning.

“It’s a good time to maybe prune the tree just before winter,” Pilecki said.

“Just the last bit of maintenance to the tree, anything that is close to a structure or that is rubbing on a structure. Preparing it for the winter. You don’t want it rubbing on structures or causing damage. Next growth season that branch rubbing on your structure or building is going to grow even that much more, and that is going to cause damage regardless of getting it trimmed or not.”

Pilecki said pruning is healthy for a tree.

“I wouldn’t prune a fruit tree or anything like that at this time of year but the tree is definitely going into dormancy, so it is a good time to trim your tree because the tree is not taking stored energy and trying to produce leaves like in the spring.”

“A lot of the diseases come from insects so you know if you create a pruning cut, in the spring when the tree is going into leaf that fresh cut is going to attract insects… and insects that carry a pathogen that’s where we get diseases in the tree.”

Pilecki added: “This time of the year, insects are not prevalent because their season or their life has gone dormant or has ended until the next season. There is less likeliness for disease to be carried this time of year. So its a good idea to have your trees pruned in this time of the year verses the spring time.”
