Although it was the chicken dance being played, it was a turkey outfit that helped gather donations for the Salvation Army Christmas Kettles on Monday in Wallaceburg.

Pastor Brian Horrobin donned a turkey outfit, borrowed from 99.1, and helped gather donations at Wallaceburg’s Wal-Mart on behalf of the Wallaceburg Veteran, First Responders and Family Support Group.

“I just want to be involved in the community, it’s a good cause,” Horrobin told the Sydenham Current.

“Every church in town supports the Salvation Army. It’s an organization that is well known in the community, for everyone that it helps in the community, so I’m all over that. I don’t mind doing something gimmicky or crazy just to see if we can pick up the donations. They have an increased need this year. It seems like every year there is an increased need.”

Rob Simpson, president of the support group, said their group wanted to spruce things up on their second day running the Christmas Kettles at Wal-Mart.

That is when he convinced Pastor Horrobin to wear the suit and get on his dancing shoes.

“When they donate, he dances,” Simpson said.

“We encourage people to get out this year, the need is so great. Just the price of hydro alone. We’re going to need food, especially in January. And toys, we’ve got to have toys.”

Horrobin added: “Our Veteran’s group, we’re really trying to put an emphasis on trying to get toys donated, as we don’t want any kids to miss Christmas. All the donations help all year long, it isn’t just the Christmas campaign, people rely on this money all year long.”

Simpson said their group will also be manning the Christmas Kettles on December 23.

They also have donation boxes set up at the Wallaceburg and District Chamber of Commerce and at the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 18 for unwrapped, brand new toys to be donated.
