Firefighters in Dresden went straight to the hall when the lights went out in Dresden yesterday evening.

Chatham-Kent Fire Department officials say the volunteer crew jumped onto the trucks and headed out to check on seniors living in both Heritage Court Retirement Lifestyle and Park Street Place Retirement Residence.

One firefighter remained at the station and turned on the generator to provide a safe place with heat and hydro for anyone in town that needed it.

“It is something we have done for over 25 years,” Station Chief Al Pray said in a press release.

“We like to check on our seniors to see if they need anything – many of them are using oxygen tanks that may need to be plugged in – we never know how long the power is going to be out for.”

Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services recommends residences have a 72 hour emergency kit.

The kit is simply a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency, such as a power outage.
