The need for sprinkler systems was highlighted after a devastating $2 million dollar blaze in Chatham.

Chatham-Kent Fire Department officials say the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management (OFMEM) completed their on scene investigation with the assistance of Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services fire investigators and the Chatham-Kent Police Service on Monday afternoon.

“The official cause of the early Sunday morning fire at 701 St. Clair Street; which affected three local business; has not been released, though the OFMEM has stated that indications at this point are not suspicious,” fire department officials stated in a press release.

All three business, Ideal Decorating, the Lighting and Accent Gallery, and Sacwal Flooring are operational, receiving support from the community and the municipality.

“This community never ceases to amaze me how it comes together to support others in a time of need,” stated Stuart McFadden, acting director of Economic Development Services.

“The businesses are working hard to get back to as normal as can be expected during this difficult time, and it’s our responsibility to help in any way we can. In fact, anyone currently thinking about home or office renovations might consider contacting one or all of these business to help them get back on their feet.”

This fire has once again highlighted the need for businesses in our community to think about how they would react to an event of this nature.

“CK Fire and Emergency Services is working closely with Economic Development to emphasize the need for business continuity planning; to safeguard the ‘economic engines’ of our local economy,” stated Ken Stuebing, fire and paramedic chief. “The focus is ‘resiliency’ – one of the pillars in the CK Plan 2035.”

Fire officials say the fire burned for nearly 11 hours and despite the efforts of over 50 firefighters the damage to the building and the occupants business’ was significant.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said approximately $2 million dollars damage was caused.

Fire officials say the rear of the building was protected by a fire sprinkler system which activated and was enhanced by firefighting operations, protecting a large area of the building.

This particular system was installed by Wallaceburg-based business, Wallace Kent Sprinkler Systems a few years ago.

CK Fire and Emergency services will be working with local businesses, partners and the community to offer guidance and support to anyone who has concerns or questions regarding fire safety, prevention and business continuity.
