Firefighters were called to a blaze in Thamesville on Thursday, after some cooking food was left unattended.

Chatham-Kent Fire Department officials say firefighters from Station #8 responded to 20866 Mull Road at 2:50 p.m. to a structure fire at the single storey family home.

“Trucks arrived on scene within minutes and the crew was able to quickly knock down the fire and contain the damage to the room where the fire started,” stated Whitney Burk, public information officer for the CKFD.

“Their swift actions prevented further damage and range of the fire. The crew stayed on scene to check for fire spread and used fans to clear the home of smoke.”

Burk said the blaze has been ruled accidental.

The “home owner was in his garage when he noticed smoke coming from residence, he realized that he had left something cooking on the stove.

“The owner did all the right things, stayed outside and called 911,” she said.

Approximately $10,000 damage was caused, while $70,000 worth of property was saved.

Burk said people should stay in the kitchen when cooking, as cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home fire injuries.
