Special to the Sydenham Current

It is that time of year again to be thinking of registering your child for junior or senior kindergarten.

This is an exciting time for many children – a chance to meet new friends, learn new skills and further develop some independence.

Things to consider prior to registration may be to find the schools in your area, transportation to the school, before and after school care and whether you want to consider a French language school. Remember your child must be turning four years of age by the end of 2017.

The Chatham-Kent School Boards and Best Start Partners will be offering kinderSTARt Registration again this year.

This is an opportunity for parents and children to visit the school and meet their teacher and other staff members. There will be fun activities at each school in preparation for junior and senior kindergarten. There will be time to get tips on healthy snacks and lunches, address any concerns you might have for your child before school starts and information on immunization. An Ages and Stages development screening can be done with your child and younger siblings 18 months to 3 years of age can also participate.

Research shows that children who are prepared and have any concerns or questions about language development, social interaction, or behavioural issues addressed before school starts are more likely to be successful. Bring your child to a kinderSTARt registration at your local school.

KinderSTARt Registration schedules can be found at http://ckphu.com/2017/01/kindergarten-registration-in-chatham-kent/. You can also check with your school for the kinderSTARt registration day or contact the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit at 519-352-7270.
