Severe thunderstorm watch in effect

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect across Chatham-Kent.

A cold front is expected to move into Ontario from Michigan this evening. Conditions are expected to be favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms along and ahead of the cold front. Thunderstorms may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and large hail.

Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Locally heavy rain is also possible. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

At 4:54 p.m. EST, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts and up to nickel size hail.

The thunderstorm is located over eastern Lambton county and is tracking northeastward at 100 km/h. The main concerns with this thunderstorm are 2 cm hail and wind gusts to 90 km/h.

Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. The thunderstorm is located over the Wallaceburg area and western Lambton county and is tracking northeastward at 100 km/h. The main concerns with this thunderstorm are 2 cm hail and wind gusts to 90 km/h.

At 4:00 p.m. EST, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts and up to nickel size hail.

The thunderstorm is located just west of Detroit and is tracking northeast at 100 km/h.

This thunderstorm is likely to track over the Wallaceburg, Port Lambton and Sombra areas near 4:20 p.m. EST.

The main concerns with this thunderstorm are 2 cm hail and wind gusts to 50 kts.

Earlier today, Mark Robinson, a storm hunter for The Weather Network, said he believes “there is a slight danger of tornadoes” in the Chatham-Kent area this evening.

says Chatham-Kent is in a danger area for severe thunderstorms.

Robinson said the main threat this evening in Southwestern Ontario is wind.

“These will be fast moving storms and likely arrival is after sunset. Be prepared!” Robinson tweeted.

Environment Canada forecasters say there is a risk of a thunderstorm tonight along with showers.

Officials with Environment Canada told Blackburn News that there is a very slight chance of a tornado developing over Southwestern Ontario, but the probability is low.

National Weather Service officials in Michigan say isolated tornadoes are possible tonight in the Detroit area, along with hail 1″ in diameter and damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph or 113 km/h.

The strongest storms are expected between 6 p.m. and 12 p.m. tonight, the Michigan forecasters said.
