Walpole Island First Nation is hosting their second Aanual Dben-Daag-Zid – First Nations with Special Needs Conference from March 2 to 3.

The conference location is Bkejwanong Kinomaagewgamg (formerly Walpole Island Elementary School).

Beverly “Kitsy” Wrightman, one of the event organizers, said she wanted to host a conference that would increase awareness regarding special needs from a First Nations perspective.

“I (saw) the need with training and workshops,” Wrightman said. “That was my vision for 20 years and it finally came true.”

The keynote speaker for this year’s conference is Dr. Jean Clinton.

Dr. Clinton is renowned locally, provincially, nationally, and more recently internationally as an advocate for children’s issues. Her special interest lies in brain development, and the crucial role relationships and connectedness play therein.
