McNaughton Family Dental offers a full range of dental services for the whole family out of their Wallaceburg location. Dr. Sean Marcy is a part of the 68 McNaughton Ave. team, as he offers his expertise in the world of orthodontics… more commonly known as braces.

“We see kids come in as young as seven-years-old,” Dr. Marcy said.

“We also treat a lot of adults patients. So there is not a hard upper limit for age but usually the most common age is teenagers. Some kids in elementary school would benefit from some orthodontic work but the bulk of work is done either 12-years-old or later.”

Dr. Marcy, who is originally from Bright’s Grove, said you can do pre-planning in the early years.

“You can tell a lot from how they are developing around seven or eight years old,” he said.

“That is a good time for a screening.”

Dr. Marcy said orthodontist’s have extra training specifically for growth and development.

Many options for braces

There is a wide selection for people that need braces as well, Dr. Marcy said.

“There is lots of different options for braces these days,” he said.

“There is traditional brackets that are metal, there are ceramic brackets that are clear and they are made of a glass, ceramic material. There is a product called Invisalign which is essentially a clear set of active aligners. It looks like a clear retainer. In certain cases it can straighten up the teeth.”

Dr. Marcy added: “There is more cosmetic options. The wires have evolved to try and provide a gentler treatment. So there has been a lot of advances.”

Braces come in a variety of materials, nickel titanium, ceramic and clear plastic.

The underlying biology of tooth realignment remains essentially the same.

They are often used to correct under bites, as well as malocclusions, over bites, cross bites, open bites, deep bites, crooked teeth, and various other flaws of the teeth and jaw.
