The Wallaceburg Sportsmen Club, formerly the Wallaceburg Snowmobile Club, have stepped up for the Wallaceburg Skating Club’s two Synchro teams.

“They said they were short on funding, so we thought our club hasn’t really donated anything in a couple years… so we asked the board of officers and they all said yes,” said Trevor Sterling, an executive member with the Sportsmen Club.

In total, $250 was donated to the Beginner Two team and $250 was handed to the Pre-Novice squad.

Randi Hull, president of the Wallaceburg Skating Club, said they have 24 skaters in total on the two teams.

“We have a Beginner Two team which is made of our preliminary skaters for the majority,” Hull said.

“They range up to 13 years of age. Then we have a Pre-Novice team and their category is from 10 to 19 years of age.”

This year both teams are going to be competing in Chatham on March 25.

“Both of the teams will skate twice in that competition,” Hull said.

“They are also showcasing in our ice show on April 1st as well.”

Hull said the money donated by the Sportsmen Club will got towards their competition fees.

“Each of the teams, to register it is just shy of $400. So this will be a nice start towards that,” she said.

“They have fundraised some of the other money through almond sales, to try and re-coupe their costs for their costumes, because they got new costumes this year too.”

Hull said having Synchro is an additional option their club can offer skaters.

“We do promote it within the club because it helps to build with their stroking skills and just their general overall skating,” she said.

“So anyone who skates in the Skating Club can certainly be part of the team. We don’t do try outs. It is whoever wants to join. The more the merrier.”

Sterling said the Wallaceburg Sportsman Club, which has six executive members and approximately 50 members overall, has donated to different programs in the past, including a school breakfast program and sponsoring free skates at the arena.

He said they raise funds every year through membership fees, annual meat and bottle draws and various poker runs.

Plans are in the works for a quad run as well, Sterling said.
