Celebrating Canada’s first ‘welcoming community’

welcome

Chatham-Kent’s distinction as the first designated welcoming community in Canada for Syrian refugees is being celebrated in the council chambers on Monday, April 10.

Audrey Ansell, Manager of Community Attraction and Promotion, will provide a presentation on how the community is working to attract newcomers from all cultures and how those efforts fit in with CK Plan 2035, Chatham-Kent’s blueprint for development during the next 20 years.

“Attracting newcomers to Chatham-Kent is essential if we are to invigorate our community,” Ansell said.

“The more we encourage people from across Canada and across the world to move here, the stronger we become.”

Chatham Coun. Brock McGregor says the positive social, economic, and cultural impacts of welcoming newcomers to the community are undeniable in Chatham-Kent.

“Our community was built through immigration,” he said.

“Realizing our shared vision for a sustainable community depends on continuing with our rich history of welcoming newcomers and promoting diverse, inclusive growth. Chatham-Kent strongly reflects Canadian ideals of inclusivity, diversity, and cooperation.”

The 15-minute presentation to be held before the 6 p.m. council meeting will demonstrate the economic, social and community value of encouraging immigration and attracting newcomers to the community.
