TBT: Sugar beet loading mishap in Wallaceburg

Thanks to our Throwback Thursday sponsor Dresden Meat Packers / Dresden Meat and Deli:

It’s Throwback Thursday once again!

Thanks to the Tom Cogghe and his father for sending in this photograph.

Here is what Tom had to say about the photo:

“Here is an photograph of Marcel (Mike) Cogghe (in the center in the white shirt). Mike used to be a sugar beet farmer and from what we were told his dad (my Great Grandfather) was one of the first to do so in the area.  Anyways apparently there used to be a ferry on Forhan St. (now call Old Glass Road) that the farmers took their crops across to the processing plant.  Well on this day while loading the ferry moved ahead and the tractor and some crops went into the water.  I do know and have seen that the Canadian and Dominion Sugar Company was a notable industry for us. It was opened in 1901. The company was known for producing raw sugar from sugar beets. It closed in 1960.”
