Wallaceburg’s Madison Broad finished in 6th place in the ‘A’ final of the 50 metre backstroke on Friday night at the Team Canada trials in British Columbia.

This was the 16-year-old swimmers best finish ever at the senior national level.

“Maddy was able to make an ‘A’ final and finish with her best finish ever at the senior national level and also the Chatham Y Pool Sharks best finish ever of 6th in her 50 metre back respectfully,” Kyle Pinsonneault, Broad’s head coach, told the Sydenham Current.

“She had a great race last night. It is a ton of pressure on a 16-year-old to swim in an ‘A’ final and swim faster then she did in the morning prelim session.”

Pinsonneault said Broad will be swimming the prelim of the 200 metre backstroke today.

“She is trying to get a fast enough time that will qualify her for the top 16 and move onto the finals tonight,” he said.

Overall, Broad is swimming the 100 metre backstroke, 50 metre backstroke, 200metre backstroke and the 50 metre freestyle.

This year, the Chatham Y Pool Sharks were able to send their largest team ever to the World Championship Trials.

Joining Broad is 16-year-old Kendra Polewski, who is swimming the the 50 metre fly, 100 metre freestyle, the 100 metre fly and 50 metre freestyle.

Pinsonneault said Polewski is setting life time best swims at the event as well.

Both swimmers have two more days of completion.

The four-day meet runs through Sunday at the Saanich Commonwealth Place in Victoria, British Columbia.
