Employees at the Canada Post office in Wallaceburg made a nice donation to the Wallaceburg Animal Shelter and the Animal Rescue Fund this week. This was from proceeds of their “Soup Thursday” lunches.

Julie Collins, a mail carrier at the Wallaceburg location, said they have gathered a total of $520 since November, when they started the initiative.

“We would take turns in making soup and bringing it in,” she said.

“We charge $2 a bowl… we have got bowls and we would have some bread. It was very successful. I was quite happy with it.”

“Next year we will do it again and we will pick another charity to donate the money to,” she said.

The Wallaceburg Animal Shelter and the Animal Rescue Fund were chosen this year, due to the personal connection with the post office.

“Susan Arends works with us and Maryanne Holland at K9 Klips is on my walk,” Collins said.

“I love going in there because she just looks after the animals. She always has a little kitten in there she wants to find a home for or even a bird. She just loves them and so does Susan. So I thought to pick that because I am an animal lover too.

Collins said the lunches were a good team building exercise for their crews as well.

“Because winter is a crappy time of year for us. Especially with that two feet of snow we have to walk in. I just thought when we come back we are tired and cold and this would be nice. It gets people together in the lunch room because sometimes we don’t have time to get together,” she said.

“I am really happy. I didn’t expect that we would make that much. It’s fun.”
