Update: Police investigating mischief at Wallaceburg Legion

Few details have been released, but the Chatham-Kent Police Service continue to investigate a mischief incident that took place outside of the Wallaceburg Legion.

Const. Kelly Helbin, public information officer with the Chatham-Kent Police Service, told the Sydenham Current the investigation is in its early stages.

“It looks like someone cut themselves while doing the damage… this is just speculation on my part,” Helbin said.

The flag was ripped down, the mail box was knocked off and some other items were damaged in front of the 52 Margaret Ave. building, Helbin said.

The culprit is unknown at this time and there was no indication of an assault, Helbin added.

“The investigation is still on-going,” she said.

As previously reported, four police cruisers were parked out front of the Legion on Wednesday morning, May 24.

A section of the front yard of the Legion was blocked off by police tape and evidence markers were spotted in various locations on the property.

A Canadian flag was laying on the ground at the base of the flagpole, along with a cigarette butt container.

Droplets, of what appeared to be blood, could be seen along the sidewalk in front of the building. It could also be seen smeared on a pole.

A Chatham-Kent Police Service officer was also spotted taking photographs on the sidewalk outside of the Wallaceburg Adult Activity Centre, across the Sydenham River from the Legion.

Mike Hindmarsh, an executive member with Legion, told the Sydenham Current the Chatham-Kent Police Service were handling the investigation.

“Something happened at the Legion, whether it is vandalism or something else… we don’t know,” he said.

“It happened during the night sometime.”

Hindmarsh added that one of the neighbours living near the Legion alerted the Legion executive after seeing the damage.

Hindmarsh said the Legion was still be open for business today from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

We’ll provide more information when it becomes available.

Anonymous callers may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
