Red Devils fall to Guleph, Dresden Raceway results, fastball scores

Red Devils drop regular season finale to Guelph

The Red Devils fell to Guelph in their last game of the regular season on Sunday.

The Regals took care of their home turf in a 12-10 win.

Evan Mathany had a ‘Gordie Howe Hat-Trick’ for the Red Devils, scoring 2 goals and adding 5 assists for 7 points. He was also in a fight late in the game.

Tyler Brown also had a 7-point game for Wallaceburg, scoring 1 goal and adding 6 assists.

Carter Hastings scored 4 goals and added 1 assist for Wallaceburg.

Sidney Powless scored twice and Vern Hill added 1 goal and 2 assists.

Noble Jacobs made 26 saves and allowed 8 goals in 29:43 minutes of action in the loss, Emily Vandamme made 15 saves on 19 shots in 30:17 minutes of action.

Wallaceburg finishes the regular season with a 12-7-1 record, good for second in the Far West Division, two points behind the 13-6-1 Windsor Clippers.

The playoff schedule has yet to be released.

Mark Austin honoured at Dresden Raceway

Former trainer Mark Austin was honoured on Sunday at Dresden Raceway and enshrined into Dresden Raceway’s Hall of Fame.

Austin started his career in Dresden in the 1980’s and that is where he broke one of the best trotters of all time in Canada, A Worthy Lad for Joe Johnston.

Austin then moved to Windsor where he worked with Jack Darling and had a hand with champions such as Gothic Dreamm and Northern Luck.

He then moved his stable to Fergus where he was the conditioner for many top horses in Canada such as Go Get Her, Part Shark, XLB Patrick, Sparky Mark and Fool Me Once.

Mark was more than just a trainer as friendships he kindled at Dresden lasted with him his entire life.

Mark’s widow Julie was in attendance on Sunday to receive the plaque and say a few words about the honour of being bestowed into Dresden Raceway’s Hall of Fame. Austin’s parents, family and daughters Paige and Paula were also on hand for the awards ceremony.

On the track Garrett Rooney was the big gun on the day as he scored four winners.

Rooney visited the winner’s circle with Burning Memories, Campassion, Beer And A Haircut and Singhampton Kenny.

Rooney now has 10 wins on the year and is the leading dash winner.

GD Cruise For Gold stayed hot at Dresden winning his fourth in a row for owner, trainer and driver Donnie Rankin. The three-year- old Althatgltrsisgold gelding went wire to wire in 2:01.1.

About 700 people bet a total handle of $23,591 which included the first week of having off track wagering which accounted for almost $2,000 into the live pool.

Wallaceburg Ladies Fastball Team action

The Wallaceburg Ladies Fastball Team beat Corunna Williams on Thursday night by a score of 12-6.

Nikki Neely pitched the complete game and had 6 strike outs.

Taryn Charbonneau had a double and a triple, while Maggie Laprise had 4 singles.

Zhahwun Shognosh and Neely had a nice play at the plate to end the 5th inning.

The game ended with a hard line drive hit back at the mound with Neely making a great catch.

On June 13, Wallaceburg mercied Petrolia Brownstones 16-5.

Neely pitched a complete game with 6 strike outs. At the plate, she helped herself out by hitting a homerun.

Maria Beauchamp, Charbonneau and Payton McFadden all had triples.

On June 8, Wallaceburg lost 12-2 at home to McArm Construction.

Amy Hull and Neely shared the pitching duties.

Chasity Sands smacked a double in the loss.
